Shirring elastic is a stretchy thread between 0.5 and 1mm, used to create a "smocked" appearance on skirts, blouses and dresses to create figure hugging garments. It can also be used on necklines, waistlines, sleeves and cuffs. 
 
For machine sewing with shirring elastic, use only on the bobbin with standard thread on the top. Hand wind the shirring elastic onto the bobbin, whilst keeping tension and stretching it slightly. Use a longer machine stitch and always test on a fabric scrap before your garment.
